So let's take the first classic example of the DJ and his audience. A lot of the DJ's in the crew for example, are on several music websites, all of them specializing on different services. Last.FM for example is a site that scans your music listening history, and matches it with that of other Last.FM users - I personally think it's one of the most overrated services out there, but it's extremely prevalent, with iphones, xbox and various other devices supporting it.
The other two big music based sites are of course Soundcloud.com and Mixcloud.com and just about everyone in our crew has a collection of tracks and mixes on there. So where you might think OMG Alex STFU already with all the schooling - I hope you understand that my intentions are as follows:
I know there are lots of people in our crew, that support our DJ's. They take their pictures, they listen to their music they post - however, they don't do anyhting to directly help the artist. What I mean by directly helping is that very few people take the time to sign up to this sites we're on to give us feedback. I fully realize that nobody that doesn't deal with this kind of stuff all the time can be expected to be on top of all this, but that's why I'm writing this.
These music sites work just like websites - if you post something, and nobody replies, nobody 'favorites' or 'likes' something, and as time goes on - other people come by, see the low listener count, and no feedback and they figure, must not be worth my clicking on the play button - where in reality - lots of people listened to it, but they just never took the 2 minutes it takes to give some feedback.
I'm sure lots of people think that clicking the "like" button somehow propels the respective person or page into stardome, but this is a failed thought process. A "like" button - to quote our own Jack Trash - is literally the least you can do. No I'm not dissing on all you "likers" - I'm just trying to put things into perspective and show you how you can indeed support the people or groups whos work you support.
Another thing you can do, which helps - is to take the mix or track or whatever it is - and re-post it. Whether it's on Twitter, Facebook or Blip.fm - if you see something good, if you really like it - show you're a true team player and go the 'extra mile' and repost it - retweet it - or do whatever else works for you in terms of spreading the love.
Lastly, let me close out by saying that the reason it's called "Social Media" is because the concept is to have people in the community be every so social - by interacting with the content.Where most of you see the content, few of you are interacting and if we all just changed our behavior by this little bit, we could have a true snow-ball-effect type promo machine.
Imagine every time someone posts a new mix, a new track, or a blog post - or anything they want support for, feedback - etc - imagine every body that was really into it - took the ball and ran with it. With the over 150 people that are already on this site, and the over 500 fans on facebook - the power literally, is with the "people".
I encourage anyone to write me an email with any questions they may have, or contact me on Facebook, call me - put out the Beat-Signal - whatever it takes - don't just sit there, do something! :)
