mIRC is a full featured Internet Relay Chat client for Windows that can be used to communicate, share, play or work with others on IRC networks around the world, either in multi-user group conferences or in one-to-one private discussions. It has a clean, practical interface that is highly configurable and supports features such as buddy lists, file transfers, multi-server connections, SSL encryption, proxy support, UTF-8 display, customizable sounds, spoken messages, tray notifications, message logging, and more. mIRC also has a powerful scripting language that can be used both to automate mIRC and to create applications that perform a wide range of functions from network communications to playing games. mIRC has been in development for over a decade and is constantly being improved and updated with new technologies.

[edit] Downloading & Installing mIRC

mIRC can be downloaded here. It's actually not free, but the banner that comes up if you don't register only stays up for a few seconds and you can definitely get by in life without buying a license. There are many other chat clients that support IRC connections like Trillian, Pidgin, Miranda a.o.

Where IRC protocols are supported by the above mentioned applications, there are a few shells that work with mIRC that I highly recommend. One of the main reasons for this suggestions is the fact that active mIRC users will never be satisfied with the options that an application like Trillian offers. Just like AOL, MSN and all the other protocols aren't supported with every feature they have, mIRC is usually relatively stripped down in its features. That's why I recommend downloading these two things:

For the installation procedure please refer to the instructions on the nnscript page

  • mIRC
  • nname script - a great shell for your mirc application. rich in features, great functionality. Do make sure to read the instructions carefully.

[edit] Configuration

The configuration of mIRC usually only has to occur once. After all settings are saved correctly you hit the connect/disconnect button as if you were going online with AIM or ICQ.

Here are some screenshots for the areas you have to enter information in order for it to connect properly.

As you can see in the picture you can pretty much fill in bogus information as long as there is something there. Now you have to select a network you want to connect to - in our case here that's EFnet.
